BOSTON – The symbolism was heavy. As the reeling Boston Red Sox prepared to shed an icon of their recent grandeur, the Blue Jays showcased two emerging stars in a victory that kept them firmly in a pennant race.

By the end of Toronto’s tenacious 4-2 win in Fenway Park, the home team was considering trade offers for its ace, Jon Lester, who won four post-season games and a second World Series ring last fall. As negotiations progressed, the Blue Jays welcomed the announcement that Lester was scratched from his scheduled start against them Wednesday night, by which time Lester might well work for another club.
“Is he starting for us?” manager John Gibbons asked impishly when he heard that Lester would not pitch against his Blue Jays.
